How to Care for Different Skin Types (The Right Way)
Whether you have dry, oily, combination or sensitive skin, we all have skin problems and we all want to fix them as effectively and as quickly as we possibly can so that we can glow with confidence.
Our team has stepped in to answer the most common questions when it comes to your skin type and recommended a few beauty “fixer-uppers” to get you glowing again in no time.
FOCUS ON: OILY SKIN
So firstly you probably want to know why you have oily skin? Oily skin occurs when your glands produce too much sebum. Too much what? Sebum is an oily substance that is created by the sebaceous glands that help to keep your skin and hair moisturised. Unfortunately too much sebum can contribute to several additional skin issues, including acne. Your oily skin all comes down to your genetics so unfortunately you can’t change this but the good news is, you can treat it!
OILY SKIN: WHAT TO DO
We always recommend to knuckle down on a tight knit skincare routine and finding the right fit for your skin type. Cleansing, toning and moisturising your skin twice a day should become a staple part of your routine. Oily skin responds well to cleansers that contain Salicylic Acid which helps to break down excess oil without over drying. Hydration is also key as it can help keep oil production under control. We recommend choosing a moisturiser formulated with Dimethicone as it can moisturise skin without being heavy like a petrolatum-based moisturiser.
FOCUS ON: DRY SKIN
Dry skin can be caused by many factors such as air conditioning, heating, cold weather and the environment in general. While some skin can just be naturally dry, these additional factors can mean bad news for your healthy glow. As well as pumping your body full of the right nutrition and drinking plenty of water, there are other solutions for your dry skin in the way of skincare.
DRY SKIN: WHAT TO DO
In addition to making sure that you consume at least 8 glasses of fresh, purified water a day, we suggest investing in a good quality moisturiser, exfoliator and moisturiser or serum. Look for ingredients such as Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Squalene, all of which are super beneficial in helping to repair dry skin.
FOCUS ON: REDNESS
Most of us experience some sort of redness on our face, neck and décolletage, especially around the nose area. Angry, red skin can also be known to some sufferers as Rosacea. Reddening of the skin can be quite embarrassing for some people, but rest assured there are ways to calm it down.
RED SKIN: WHAT TO DO
If you are prone to redness then chances are, you have sensitive skin so measures must be taken to make sure that you are extra kind and gentle to your skin. Always take it easy on the exfoliation, use an SPF moisturiser everyday and invest in products that provide support to the surface layers of the skin.
FOCUS ON: DULL SKIN
Maybe you have dull or grey-toned skin? A condition not as common as oily or dry skin but dull skin can happen and here’s why. Factors such as stress and not getting enough sleep plus even dehydration can cause your skin to look a little less full of life.
DULL SKIN: WHAT TO DO
Sleep, sleep and more sleep! Resting your body and de-stressing as much as possible will put the life back into your skin. The most important time for your skin’s health is while you are sleeping, during this time your skin cells rebuild and if this isn’t happening to the best of it’s ability you can find yourself with flakey, dull and lifeless skin, as well as possessing those dreaded dark eye circles. However, we also have some skincare tips to help rejuvenate and get that glow back. We highly recommend that you invest in products containing water-rich Hyaluronic Acid to plump up that dull skin of yours.
FOCUS ON: AGEING SKIN
Unfortunately this is a non-negotiable process of getting older that we can not put a complete stop to, however we can certainly aid the ageing process of our skin and give it the love that it deserves. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more fragile and we lose elastic tissue which causes that loose, hanging skin. During this process, the epidermis thins out and causes our skin to have that more transparent appearance.
AGEING SKIN: WHAT TO DO
There are many things that we can and certainly should do as both our bodies and our skin ages. These include, ensuring that we wear an SPF moisturiser at all times, eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and looking after our general wellbeing. All of these factors can and will ensure that you age that little bit more gracefully, On the other side of the coin, is skincare and this is something that we can all do to ensure that our skin gets the best attention and treatment as it ages. Some of the key ingredients to look out for in your skincare to aid in all things anti-ageing are; Alpha-Lipoic Acid, Coenzyme Q10, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C and Lactic Acid.
FOCUS ON: COMBINATION SKIN
Combination skin can be one of the trickier skin types to battle. You may have an oily T-zone and dry cheeks or vice-versa. It really is a balancing act to treat both areas at the same time but it is achievable.
COMBINATION SKIN: WHAT TO DO
There are many products out there to treat your combination skin but because your skin behaves differently in certain areas, sometimes we also need to treat each area separately. So for example, using a light moisturiser daily will do the trick, however when those dry areas are causing you grief, opt for a thicker more intense moisturiser or serum to treat those areas. The same applies for the oily zones, treat these areas as you would with any oily skin condition and up the anti when that sebum production is at it’s peak. As a rule of thumb – gentle is always best for combination skin, look for ingredients such as Green Tea, Argan Oil, Lavender and Jojoba oils.
