Is It Necessary To Wear Sunscreen Everyday?

To wear or not to wear? This is the question! One topic of misunderstanding is whether it is necessary to wear a sunscreen each and every single day, even if you spend the majority of your day indoors.

We are going to advise that yes, we believe that your skin can definitely benefit from wearing a sunscreen daily and here’s a few reasons why.

Put simply, sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which come in two forms – UVA and UVB rays.

WHAT ARE UVA RAYS? These are the sun’s rays that create deeper level damage at the cell level and can be responsible for premature skin ageing, fine lines and wrinkles

WHAT ARE UVB RAYS? The sun’s rays that penetrate into the epidermis (the top layer of your skin) causing damage to the cells.

The sun, as it is our friend and we all need the life force which is the sun, can also be our foe when it comes to healthy skin. Sun damage is one of your skin’s top enemies when it comes to being unhealthy and creating and uneven skin ton. We want to keep that tone nice and even and healthy by protecting our skin with a sunscreen as well as listening to our skin’s needs when it comes to the right products.

Sunscreen helps to minimise the penetration of those harmful UV rays into the skin and thus also helps to protect our skin from a of a variety of additional skin disorders like acne and discolouration.

Then there is the inevitable that we are all trying to avoid – the ageing process! This is a non-negotiable for all of us (sorry!) but we can certainly help our skin age a bit more gracefully with a loving and helping hand. Overexposure to sunlight can, and will, certainly increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles so wearing a sunscreen is a bit of a no-brainer when it comes to that extra layer of protection.

DID YOU KNOW? That essential proteins in the skin like keratin are protected when sunscreen is applied? These proteins are mainly responsible for keeping our skin smooth and healthy both in appearance and in the overall function of our skin.

BUT HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A SUNSCREEN?

A crucial question that many of us ask. Firstly, it’s very important to remember that not all sunscreens are created equally. Our skin varies from person to person and the requirements that it needs to be happy and healthy should always be looked at while continuing to address your skin concerns.

ACNE PRONE SKIN

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: A fragrance free formulation.

WHY? Fragrance, parfum, essential oils, and linalool (a component of essential oils) can all cause unwanted irritation if you are prone to acne or have sensitive skin. It’s best to stick to a fragrance free formulations when it comes to your sunscreen and all of your skincare products.

DRY SKIN

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Look for a daily moisturiser with an added SPF.

WHY? Choosing a sunscreen that contains nourishing ingredients, like non-fragrant plant oils, cocoa and shea butter to moisturise and protect skin, as well as skin-restoring ingredients, such as ceramides and peptides, that add suppleness and help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

OILY SKIN

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: A lightweight formulation such as a tinted moisturiser with a matte finish.

WHY? Well-formulated water-based sunscreens with absorbent ingredients will be your oily skin’s best friend! Your skin won’t feel heavy and claggy and the soft tinted finish will replace a heavier foundation for all-day wear.

SENSITIVE SKIN

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: Stay away from irritating ingredients such as fragrance and citrus oils.

WHY? Stay very clear of irritating ingredients, including fragrance (whether synthetic or natural), alcohol, citrus oils, and other plant extracts that can sensitise skin and make it feel drier and increase redness.
